Water and green woodland in the mountain landscape around Navacerrada

Returning to the Mountains: Navacerrada

Northwest of Madrid, Navacerrada belongs to the mountain landscape of the Sierra de Guadarrama. Stone, woodland and open paths give this part of the region a rhythm far removed from the capital’s streets.

Returning brings a different kind of discovery. A familiar slope, the shade beside the water or a bend in a path can become the details by which we remember a place.

Madrid’s mountain landscape

Around Navacerrada, rocky slopes and mountain paths reveal another side of Madrid. The Sierra de Guadarrama connects the capital with a landscape of granite, forests and changing seasons.

Walking makes that change in scale tangible. Buildings give way to vegetation and uneven ground; attention turns towards the shape of the hills, the texture of stone and the light passing over them.

Following the water

Beside a stream, the landscape becomes more intimate. Water moves between stones, leaves cast shifting shadows and the surface catches fragments of the sky.

Rainfall and the seasons alter the scene, giving a familiar place a different character on each visit. Returning offers time to notice those changes: a quieter current, deeper shade or new growth along the bank.

The details we return to

Back in the village, the mountain’s materials reappear in stone walls and the warm tones of timber. A bench, a bag and a notebook mark a pause between the walk and the journey home.

For Macarena de Alba, these observations become part of a visual memory: grey beside ochre, dark green against pale fabric, rough stone near soft leather. Inspiration can begin by looking again at somewhere we already know.
