A Garden for Madrid: El Retiro

In central Madrid, El Retiro offers a different rhythm: gravel paths, deep shade and the open water of the Estanque Grande. A place to cross the city, meet someone or walk without a destination.

Its gardens began as part of the seventeenth-century royal retreat of Philip IV. Today, that landscape belongs to everyday Madrid, where history and the simple pleasure of being outdoors share the same space.

The art of the paseo

Beside the lake, rowing boats move below the monument to Alfonso XII while the tree-lined paths fill with walkers. Grand architecture becomes the backdrop to an ordinary afternoon.

This is the pleasure of the paseo: walking as an activity in itself. With no need to hurry, small things come into focus — shifting shadows, the texture of a path and the way summer light passes through the leaves.

Puerta de Alcalá seen through El Retiro’s iron gates

Through the gates

Near the park’s northwestern corner, the Puerta de Alcalá marks an older entrance to Madrid. Built during the reign of Charles III, it now stands within the city that grew beyond it.

Seen through the park’s iron gates, stone and metal frame the transition between garden and street. A royal retreat became a public park; a city gateway became a familiar landmark. Both remain part of the routes people take today.

Bag and notebook on a stone bench under trees in El Retiro

The things we notice

A bench beneath the trees is enough reason to stop. A notebook, the grain of leather, the pattern of leaves and a patch of sunlight bring the scale of the park back to the things we carry.

For Macarena de Alba, these everyday encounters are part of understanding a place. Soft greens, pale stone and fine botanical details offer starting points for colour and embroidery — observations gathered slowly, along the way.
