Zahara de la Sierra above the Zahara-El Gastor reservoir

Zahara Above the Water

Zahara de la Sierra rises above the Zahara-El Gastor reservoir in the province of Cádiz. White houses climb towards a rocky summit, where the remains of a medieval fortress overlook the surrounding mountains.

This is one of Andalusia’s pueblos blancos, on the edge of the Sierra de Grazalema landscape. From a distance, village, rock and water form a striking composition, each belonging to a different chapter of the place’s history.

Mountain landscape and reservoir near Zahara

The water below

The blue-green expanse beneath Zahara is a reservoir rather than a natural lake. It adds a modern layer to a landscape long shaped by settlement, agriculture and the mountain terrain.

From the viewpoints, the scale opens out: roads become fine lines and the shore traces the folds of the valley. Water and rock bring a different rhythm to the view beyond the white streets.

Macarena walking between whitewashed walls in Zahara

A village that follows the mountain

Within Zahara, the hillside sets the pace. Narrow streets and steps rise between whitewashed façades, tiled roofs and iron balconies, bringing the landscape into the experience of walking.

Above the houses, the castle recalls the strategic importance of this elevated position. At street level, that broad history becomes intimate: a doorway, an arch and the changing shadow across a wall.

Brown bag, notebook and pale fabric against a white wall

From landscape to detail

A closer view reveals another palette: warm brown against white lime, pale fabric beside a textured wall. The village’s strong contrasts become quieter relationships between materials.

For Macarena de Alba, inspiration moves between these scales. A distant silhouette can suggest proportion; a small detail can suggest texture or colour. Zahara invites us to pay attention to both.
